“Hip Hop originated as a form of Black music and has consistently served as a cornerstone of Black culture. In the past decade, however, individuals from diverse racial backgrounds have increasingly engaged with Hip Hop, often displaying a lack of understanding that has been met with resistance by those who have longstanding connections to the genre. This dynamic has fueled an ongoing debate about the practice of gatekeeping within the Hip Hop community.”

The topic of Gatekeeping has run rampant in the last year or two, with many ending up divided on whether it is needed or not needed in the hip-hop community. In this article, I show both the advantages and disadvantages Gatekeeping Hip Hop can bring.
